Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my portrait take to complete?

Small portraits may only take 1-3 days, medium portrait sizes around a week, and largest sizes could take up to a month. When you place a deposit, you are given a start date for my next available time slot which varies throughout the year. Please let me know if you are hoping to have your portrait done by a particular date if it is a gift. Rush orders may be possible for an additional cost as I work evenings and weekends to make this possible.

What if I don't have good photos?

The quality of your photo reference may have a direct impact on the final result of your portrait, but I understand that it's not always possible to get great images. I am happy to work with lesser quality images so long as I can clearly see facial features to achieve a likeness of your pet. I am happy to look over your photos and let you know what I think. Please do not send professional photos as I need permission from the photographer to use their images.

Shipping

Portraits are shipped securely via Canada Post in a flat rigid mailer or box if framed. You have the option to pay for letter mail on smaller portraits at your own risk but tracking is advised. If items are damaged in the mail, and proof is provided, I will redraw your portrait free of charge. Ask me for a quote if you would like to know exact shipping cost before committing to your portrait commission. Items are shipped on Monday or Thursday mornings only. Worldwide shipping is available.

What is the difference between pastel and coloured pencil?

Pastel and coloured pencil are both dry mediums and require framing. Pastel creates a softer look with more vibrancy, whereas coloured pencil allows for more highly realistic detail. I do not suggest coloured pencil for low quality reference images, but is a great medium for a simple and elegant style to suit the modern home, especially if you opt for no background. Pastel is great for adding a pop of colour to your home. Coloured pencil is more time consuming, hence the price difference. For a direct comparison between the two mediums, please see the images posted to the "Commission A Portrait" page.

What if I don't like my finished portrait?

While your deposit is non-refundable, you are not required to pay the remaining balance if you are not satisfied with the end result. If you choose not to proceed with final payment, you will not receive your portrait and it will not be redrawn without a second deposit to cover time and cost of materials. Clear communication is key to prevent any disappointment and I strive to exceed expectations!

What framing options do you provide?

We create handmade frames in two different styles, rustic or maple. All frames include an acid free white mat and standard clear glass, but you can upgrade to conservation quality materials for an additional cost. Frames are made to order so please let us know in advance if you would like a frame and with what materials you prefer so that your order can be completed within a reasonable time frame of completing the portrait.
